If your boiler is working normally, it is easy to leave servicing until something goes wrong. The problem is that the first time many people discover an issue is when the heating is suddenly being used every day and the boiler is under much greater demand.
After more than 35 years working with boilers and heating systems, I would normally recommend having a boiler serviced before the coldest part of winter rather than waiting until afterwards. That does not mean there is one compulsory month when every boiler should be serviced. The important thing is that it is checked regularly, ideally once every 12 months, and before you become completely reliant on it through winter.
How often should a boiler be serviced?
For most gas boilers, an annual service is the sensible routine. Major manufacturers including Worcester Bosch and Vaillant recommend servicing once every 12 months to help check that the appliance is operating safely and correctly. An annual service may also be required to keep a manufacturer's guarantee valid, so it is worth checking the terms for your particular boiler.
The exact timing does not need to be identical to the day every year, but I would avoid allowing several years to pass simply because the boiler appears to be working normally. Some developing problems do not immediately stop the heating or hot water.
Is summer the best time to service a boiler?
In many cases, yes.
Summer and early autumn are often the most practical times to arrange a service because you are less dependent on the heating. Worcester Bosch specifically recommends summer servicing because engineers tend to be less busy with breakdowns and there is more time to deal with any repairs before the colder weather arrives. Vaillant gives similar advice and recommends preparing the boiler ahead of winter.
There is also a practical benefit. If an engineer identifies a worn component or another issue during a summer service, you have time to deal with it before the boiler becomes essential every day.
That is preferable to discovering the same fault on a freezing morning in December.
Is it too late to service a boiler in autumn?
No. If your boiler has not been serviced during spring or summer, I would still rather have it checked in autumn than deliberately wait until the following year.
Autumn is when many households start using their heating properly again. It is also when previously unnoticed problems can begin to show themselves, such as falling pressure, unusual noises, radiators heating unevenly or controls not behaving as expected.
If the boiler is already overdue for its annual service, there is little benefit in postponing it simply because the ideal summer window has passed.
Should you service a boiler during winter?
You can have a boiler serviced at any time of year, including winter.
The disadvantage is mainly practical. Heating engineers naturally receive more breakdown and emergency work during colder weather. Worcester Bosch, for example, states that winter repairs take priority over annual servicing within its own service plans.
If your annual service happens to fall in January or February, you do not need to wait until summer just to change the date. But if you have flexibility, arranging routine maintenance during the warmer months can be more convenient.
Most importantly, if the boiler is already showing signs of a fault, do not wait for a scheduled service. A service and a repair are not the same thing.
Should you wait until after winter?
If your boiler is due a service before winter, I would not intentionally postpone it until spring just because it is currently working.
Winter is when the boiler is likely to work hardest. Heating may run for several hours a day, hot-water demand continues as normal and colder temperatures leave much less room for an unexpected breakdown.
A service before that period gives an engineer an opportunity to identify issues before the appliance becomes heavily relied upon.
That does not guarantee a boiler will never break down, but it is a much better position than going into winter with an appliance that has not been checked for several years.
What does a boiler service actually check?
A proper boiler service is more than simply looking at the appliance and confirming that it turns on.
The exact procedure depends on the boiler and manufacturer, but an engineer will typically inspect the appliance and its installation, check its operation and safety, look for signs of deterioration or faults and carry out the relevant manufacturer checks. Vaillant states that a professional boiler service commonly takes around 30 minutes to an hour where no additional problems are found.
The engineer may also ask whether you have noticed any problems during the year. If the boiler has been losing pressure, making unusual noises or behaving differently, mention it rather than assuming it is unrelated.
Can a service prevent a boiler breakdown?
No service can guarantee that a mechanical appliance will never fail. What servicing can do is provide an opportunity to identify developing issues before they become more serious.
Worcester Bosch notes that annual servicing can help identify faults before they develop into breakdowns, while Vaillant recommends yearly servicing to help identify worn parts and maintain reliable operation.
From an engineer's point of view, that is one of the biggest reasons to service before winter. It is much easier to deal with a developing issue while you still have heating and hot water than after the boiler has stopped completely.
Does a new boiler still need servicing?
Yes.
A new boiler should still be serviced according to the manufacturer's requirements. Vaillant advises that the first service should normally take place around the anniversary of installation, and both Vaillant and Worcester Bosch state that regular annual servicing may be required to maintain their guarantees.
Do not assume that a long warranty means the boiler can simply be left unchecked for several years. If the manufacturer's guarantee requires annual servicing, missing those services could affect future claims.
Keep the service records somewhere safe.
What if you have just moved into a house?
If you have recently moved and there is no clear record showing when the boiler was last serviced, I would arrange one rather than guessing.
That gives you a starting point for future annual servicing and allows an engineer to inspect the appliance before you become heavily reliant on it. Vaillant similarly recommends arranging a service after moving into a property where recent service records are unavailable.
It is also worth finding out the boiler's age, model and whether there is any remaining manufacturer's guarantee.
Is a boiler service the same as a Gas Safety Certificate?
No.
A boiler service and a landlord gas safety check are related to gas safety, but they are not the same thing.
Landlords have specific legal duties to arrange annual gas safety checks on relevant gas appliances and provide tenants with the required record. Gas Safe Register confirms that landlords must ensure gas appliances are safety checked annually.
A boiler service is maintenance of the appliance and involves a more detailed assessment of its condition and operation. If you are a landlord, make sure you understand which checks and records your property requires rather than assuming one automatically replaces the other.
What should you check before winter?
Even between annual services, there are a few straightforward things worth checking before colder weather arrives:
Test the heating before you actually need it
Check the boiler for any fault codes
Check the pressure against the manufacturer's recommended range
Make sure the thermostat and programmer are working
Check that radiators warm up as expected
Listen for any new banging, whistling or gurgling noises
Make sure your carbon monoxide alarm is working
If anything has changed since the previous winter, it is better to investigate it early rather than wait for the first really cold week.
So, when is the best time to service your boiler?
If you have the choice, summer or early autumn is usually the best time. The heating is being used less, engineers generally have fewer winter breakdowns to deal with, and there is time to address any problems before colder weather arrives.
But the season is less important than the regularity. If your boiler is overdue, do not wait another six months purely because you have missed the ideal window.
My advice is simple: service it once a year, keep a record, and ideally have it checked before you become dependent on it through winter.
